….of Rabbits and Hats

…or shall I say “in defense of crackpottery”?

I’ve said it before. I’ll say it again. Humanity is in a bit of a pinch just now. Need all the help we can get, yes?

It may be that in order to save our sorry asses we humans are going to need to pull a rabbit out of our collective hat any day now. And what if we’ve misplaced our hat? And what if we don’t believe in rabbits?

By the way, I don’t think Rupert Sheldrake is a classic Crackpot, though he intentionally plays the crackpot card often enough.  I admire him, and here’s why.  Sheldrake is playing Devil’s Advocate, and we need to hear it.

I’ve actually come to a bit of a decision, in part in response to Rupert Sheldrake’s latest book “Science Set Free”.  I do not have an academic job. Unlike many people who aspire to understand Natural Philosophy, I have nothing to lose by riding the crackpot wave.

It is arguably my duty to speculate.

If people in my position – at least moderately scientifically informed, and not economically dependent upon being perceived as scientifically orthodox – don’t have the courage and, let us say it, self-deprecating humor to take a chance on looking foolish or gullible, then who will?

‘Tis my duty.

We Have Just Begun Our Part of the Fighting

September 14th, 2009 § 0 comments § permalink

This morning a metaphor for our current battle to include a Robust Public Option in the President’s health insurance plan struck me.  Have a look at these lines from Walt Whitman’s The Battle of the Bonhomme Richard and the Serapis.

Our frigate takes fire,

The other asks if we demand quarter?

If our colors are struck and the fighting done?

Now I laugh content for I hear the voice of my little captain,

We have not struck, he composedly cries, we have just begun our

part of the fighting.

President Obama, we are ready to fight for your health plan if it contains a Robust Public Option.  Most of us Americans are sick and tired of having our lives lorded over by Corporations, much as the American colonists with whom John Paul Jones was fighting in 1779 were sick and tired of having their lives lorded over by the British.

This is really where we’re at, isn’t it?  Either we are Sovereign Citizens or we are just little pansy Consumers, and all this noise about Democracy and being represented in Congress is just a Potemkin village, a soporific,  a farce to keep us pacified while the Big Bosses have their way with us.

What’s it going to be, America?

Serene stands the little captain,

He is not hurried, his voice is neither high nor low,

His eyes give more light to us than our battle-lanterns.

Toward twelve there in the beams of the moon they surrender to us.

Fired Up? Ready To Go?

It’s Up To Us

I really don’t want to think about Government and Democracy and Big Finance and Insurance Companies and Agribusiness and Global Warming and so forth.

And I wish you didn’t need to think about all these things either. It would be nice if everything were OK. It would be nice if electing well-meaning people were adequate to ensure good governance.

But it’s not.

A health care metaphor…

Single Payer – Medicare for All

June 8th, 2009 § 0 comments § permalink

We need a Public Option, at the very least, in our health care.  The thing that bugs me most about the current employer based systems is how they tend to serve as a tether, tying people to employment they would otherwise reject.

I haven’t a lot to say about health care – I do, however have a sense that now is the time to rid our families and our nation of the health biz parasites that have in millions of instances enslaved and bankrupted us.

A couple of links – one on Single Payer – Medicare for All from DailyKos.

Also, Sen. Bernie Sanders introduces single payer bill.
